“Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has;
it never comes to the aid of spiritual things,
but - more frequently than not - struggles against the divine Word,
treating with contempt all that emanates from God”
Martin Luther
"Faith and reason are like two wings
on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth;
and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—
in a word, to know himself
—so that, by knowing and loving God,
men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves"
Blessed John Paul II

I would say the latter is profound, and the former to be profoundly idiotic.
With Luther it wasn't that reason fought against the Word, but that it struggled against his Pride (which is truly, IMHO, what launched the Protestant reformation)
